The Golden Age of Mexican Cinema spanned three decades and produced comedies, romances, and dramas. We will play “Maria Candelaria” (1943) on May 1st. See an IMDB summary below:

“María Candelaria” (1943) is a renowned Mexican film directed by Emilio Fernández. Set in a small indigenous community in Mexico, the film tells the tragic love story of María Candelaria, a young woman ostracized by society due to rumors of her mother’s infidelity. María falls in love with Lorenzo, a young man who shares her marginalized status.

As their love blossoms, they face prejudice and discrimination from the townspeople who view them as outcasts. The film explores themes of social inequality, prejudice, and the struggle for acceptance. It also delves into the oppressive power dynamics of a class-based society, where the wealthy exploit the impoverished and indigenous population.

We welcome you to bring the whole family with chairs and snacks!
