What people say about Main Plaza

Main Plaza, Plaza de las Islas, has been central to San Antonio from the beginning of our founding. It is a place of history, memory, life, culture, faith and tradition. It continues to inspire us and we must all keep it alive for future generations.

I think about what the landscape looked like and what it meant to our ancestors when they arrived in 1731. It warms my own heart to walk in their footsteps in and around the Plaza and to share their story with locals and visitors alike. Our ancestors are calling upon us to do so.

Great cities are defined by iconic public squares where people from all walks of life can gather, and San Antonio is no different. Main Plaza’s stories are woven into the fabric of our city, and investing in its future helps preserve our identity while creating a space everyone can enjoy. The new amenities reflect years of public input and community support, improving accessibility for both residents and visitors. I am proud to represent this cultural asset, and we look forward to continuing our work with the Main Plaza Conservancy to ensure its long‑term vibrancy.

From Our Executive Director

Welcome to Main Plaza - the Heart of the City™. You're standing in a historic place where nearly 300 years ago Canary Islanders forged an arduous journey to settle a new town now known as San Antonio. Since the beginning Main Plaza has been the People's Plaza - a hub for civic, commercial, social, and religious life. At Main Plaza Conservancy we aim to maintain the relevance of this place for locals and visitors. Stay tuned as we embark upon continued improvements to increase access, beauty, and gathering spaces for all to enjoy.

We're glad you're here,

Molly Hall-Villareal

Executive Director, Main Plaza Conservancy.
