El Nacimiento - The Birth of San Antonio

El Nacimiento The Birth of San Antonio is an educational entertainment presenting the rich history of the city’s beginnings through music, dance, and drama, an "EDUTAINMENT" of the origins of San Antonio presented by the four founding community groups of San Antonio! Beginning promptly at 1:30 PM at Main Plaza before the front doors of San Fernando Cathedral, the event is FREE and open to the public.

This thrilling presentation, which will begin with an impressive procession into Main Plaza from the Spanish Governor's Palace, will allow those representing Native Americans, Spanish Presidio Soldiers, Spanish Friars, and the Canary Islanders to provide a gift of storytelling about their ancestors during the Spanish colonial era genesis of what is now San Antonio.

El Nacimiento The Birth of San Antonio will highlight the importance of these communities, individually and together, to the foundation and unique history of San Antonio.

The Canary Islands Descendants Association presents this gift in conjunction with

- American Indians in Texas

- Rio Grande Native American Church

- San Antonio Founding Heritage

- San Antonio Living History Association

- Tehuan Band of Mission Indians of San Antonio

- 1718 San Antonio Founding Families & Descendants

5:00 PM17:00

INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY

INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY originated in 2001 in Melbourne, Austrailia when two advocates, Sally J. Finn and Peter Streker, got together to raise awareness of the risk of overdose; and remember those lost to overdose.  Together they held a local event and handed out silver ribbons to anyone affected by overdose..  Since 2001 Overdose Awareness Day has extended to cities all around the world (including our very own State Capital, and now the Alamo City) to become International Overdose Awareness Day; held annually on August 31st.

WE, THE CITY OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS ARE STANDING WITH OTHER CITIES ALL AROUND THE WORLD, AND PROCLAIMING AUGUST 31, 2017 AS INTERNATIONAL OVERDOSE AWARENESS DAY - SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS.

What is International Overdose Awareness Day - San Antonio, Texas?

IOAD - SATX is about AWARENESS, PREVENTION, INTERVENTION and REMEMBRANCE.

We as a city will raise Awareness on the risk of overdose due to street, and prescription drugs.  Together we will aim for Prevention of substance use by youth in our city.  They are the future of San Antonio.  We will offer Intervention resources to those in the community in active addiction, and sadly, we will Remember those we have lost to overdose in our very own city of San Antonio, Texas.  We as a city will not lose one more!

Please join us on the steps of City Hall as we present the Proclamation for International Overdose Awareness Day - San Antonio, Texas.

August 31, 2017

4:30 pm

Steps of San Antonio City Hall

100 Military Plaza

San Antonio, Texas 78205

Immediately after the presentation we will 'walk for awareness' to Main Plaza.  We will have local organizations set up at Main Plaza with informational tables to offer resources to the community from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.  We will close with a remembrance ceremony.

QuikTrip to open 100 stores in San Antonio and Austin

Tulsa, Oklahoma-based gas and convenience retailer QuikTrip announced plans to open 100 new locations in San Antonio and Austin by summer of 2018.

The retailer, which has had locations in the Dallas-Fort Worth market since 1999, currently operates 134 stores in Texas and more than 750 locations across 11 states.

QuikTrip locations across Arizona have now started made to order food.

Jim Poulin, "We've had great success in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, and when we look at San Antonio, we see it's a hot, growing community.," said Mike Thornbrugh, QuikTrip's manager of public and governmental affairs. "One thing we look at when expanding to new markets is livability for our employees. We think San Antonio has the whole package."

QuikTrip was founded in 1958 and employs approximately 20,000 people. It’s last major expansion was in 2011 when the company added 75 stores in Charlotte, North Carolina and Greenville, South Carolina.

Thornbrugh said the latest expansion could bring more than 1,000 jobs to the region.

"The average pay for a manager at a QuikTrip is $80,000," said Thornbrugh. "We're not your typical c-store."

QuikTrip already competes directly with CST Brand's Corner Store retailers in Dallas-Forth Worth, and the expansion will see the two retailers comepeting in two more Texas markets.
