Shared Belief in a Strong Downtown to Take History Forward

A vital town square that lives up to the plans set forth by the Canary Islander settlers nearly 300 years ago requires connectivity, convergence, commemorating the past, and embracing creativity to remain relevant for future generations. We’re encouraged by the generosity of our giving partners and the thoughtfulness of our advisory committee as revitalization moves forward at our beloved Main Plaza, Plaza de las Islas Canarias.

Over the last year, many new people have raised their hands to support this undertaking, offering their time, talent, and resources to Main Plaza Conservancy. One important new face is Kelly Steves Moody, who is temporarily serving as Interim Executive Director while Executive Director, Molly Hall-Villareal is on maternity leave, and will remain on as an important member of Main Plaza Conservancy’s Advisory Council.

Kelly has enthusiastically come on board to support our work in providing San Antonio with its generational gathering space and to help facilitate efforts advancing the capital improvements coming to the Heart of the City.

We asked Kelly to share her insights on the role, why she chose to support Main Plaza Conservancy, and what she hopes to help accomplish:

When I stand in Main Plaza, I’m standing in the same place where our city’s founding families were brave enough to take a giant leap of faith to build a new life full of possibility—not knowing what successes or failures might come their way. I feel inspired to lean into the possibilities this beautiful community continues to offer.

The beginning of our city is worth celebrating. It reminds us that big visions can be realized. There’s no better place to carry that forward than the Heart of the City, where the original families forged their future.

I want to nurture that spirit of “we can do this – together” for my own children to witness. I hope it carries forward for generations to come.
