SAN ANTONIO|THE SAGA
On June 13, 2014, San Antonio debuted “San Antonio|The Saga,” a captivating video art installation on the magnificent façade of San Fernando Cathedral. Created by renowned French Artist, Xavier de Richemont, this 7,000-sq.-ft. projection with custom choreographed music in surround sound will narrate the historical discovery, settlement and development of San Antonio. Now the seventh-largest city in the nation, San Antonio is a pivotal location in the story and identity of the United States and North America.
“San Antonio|The Saga,” is going to command attention and welcome the world to visit and experience a historic San Antonio destination, Main Plaza,” noted Jane Pauley-Flores, Executive Director of Main Plaza Conservancy.
This 24-minute journey will be renowned painter and video artist Xavier de Richemont’s first outdoor video art installation in the United States. His public installations can be seen in France, Germany, Spain, Morocco, Mexico, Canada, and soon, Main Plaza.
“This is more astonishing than I imagined,” acclaimed Marise McDermott, President & CEO Witte Museum. “To change the tenor, shape and reality of the façade is amazing. To challenge the understanding of an iconic cathedral into a universe of art is breathtaking.”
Originally built between 1738 and 1755, San Fernando Cathedral is the oldest operating sanctuary in North America. It sits in Main Plaza, the heart of historic San Antonio. Main Plaza is the ideal location for this story to be told as it is one of only four colonial plazas left in the United States, and the only one with a cathedral.
“We are very enthusiastic about our involvement in this project with the Main Plaza Conservancy”, stated Archbishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller. “We gladly bless this effort and give our overwhelming support to San Antonio|The Saga video art installation.”
This breathtaking artistic representation will become a recurring event on Main Plaza that visitors and residents alike can experience. Opening events are free and open to the public.

Xavier de Richemont is a French painter born in 1959 in Algeria. He currently lives and works in Paris, France. He studied painting at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Aix-en-Provence (France). He worked closely for the theater and the opera with artists such as Robert Wilson, David Salle and Andy de Groat.Xavier de Richemont has designed many monumental video installations worldwide. He signed in 2012 the opening of the Grand Maya Museum of Merida (Mexico) with a founding work in the Maya World.
Xavier participated in many events of Contemporary Video Art in the United States and Canada and more generally on the American continent, especially in Mexico, where he is preparing a major speech on the pyramids of Chichen Itza in 2013 and the archaeological sites of Tulum and Xochicalco. His work also leads the edge of the Caucasus, where he is preparing a major facility for a new museum in Baku Azerbaijani.
Xavier works in traits and lyrical movements, working on the slow mixing and abstraction congruent with narration and music which is projected in each video. His continued search for contemporary video writing coupled with his stage experience, temperament, and his talent as a video composer make him the most sought after artist in the world.
