"The new fountains at Main Plaza employ the highest standards of water quality for interactive water features in the nation" per designer Jim Garland.
Potable waters are supplied to the fountain system from the city. These waters then recirculate constantly, and new water is only added to make up what is lost to evaporation, splash, or when the fountains are emptied for maintenance purposes (which is not very often). While recirculating, the waters pass through a filtration system which removes gross and fine debris and then they pass through a sanitation system which adds biocides to kill germs. The system is designed to circulate all the waters in the fountain through the filtration/purification equipment every 30 minutes. That places its water quality significantly higher than local codes currently require.
